The Fault In Our Stars
Hello Guys, How are you all out there? Today, its going to be quite emotional one. The Fault In Our Stars is one of the best book I have ever read. I have read this book twice and every time I ended it with teary eyes. You definitely would have heard about it. Right? But have you ever wondered what is in this book that will make you cry? What makes you feel so attached with the characters of this book? Let’s explore all these question here.
Hazel, a 16 year old teenager, reluctantly attended cancer patients’ support group, not knowing that this event would be the life changing event for her. She used a portable oxygen tank to breathe properly. There, she met a teenager boy, Augustus Waters, who was their to support his friend. They both became friend soon and started hanging out with each other. In course of meeting, they both shared their experiences with each other. Hazel talked about her thyroid cancer that was spread to her lungs. Augustus too revealed that he had osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer but he had been now cancer free after losing one of his leg. Hazel was initially reluctant to start any sort of relation with him because of her disease. But later in the story, we see that they became good of friends. So this is the brief introduction of the characters. Now guys, What do you think? How there fate is going to take a new turn? And how they are going to deal together with all the hurdles, hurdles that could even take their life? Lets talk about it.
Now as their friendship grew, they started discussing about each other’s favorite novels. Augustus gave his favorite novel, The Price Of Dawn to Hazel for reading and Hazel recommended him of her favorite novel, An Imperial Affliction. Hazel started explaining the story of the novel. It was the novel about a girl Anna, who was also suffering from cancer. And it was the only novel with which Hazel could relate her own experience. But the problem with the novel was that the author left it mid sentence, denying to disclose the fate of novel’s characters. Hazel also tried to contact the author of the novel, Peter Van Houten, who went to Amsterdam and no one had heard from him since then. What Hazel was more concerned about was the fate of Anna’s mother. She felt that if Anna’s mother survived her death than her mother would also be able to survive her death.
Augustus, being a good friend, tried to contact Van Houten and he was successful in that. Van Houten replied them to visit him once in Amsterdam to know the end of the novel. They planned everything to go to Amsterdam. And what next? Hazel started liking Augustus a lot but she knew that she would hurt him once she die. Later, Hazel suffers with some serious problem, in which her lungs got filled with liquid, and she was admitted in ICU. But you know what here will make you cry and smile, both at the same time? When she was struggling with her cancer in ICU, Augustus was near him. He never left the hospital, not even once. Isn’it a true love guys? But what is going to happen next in their lives?
Augustus took Hazel to Amsterdam after the advice of her doctor, saying that she need to live her life up to the fullest. But then happened a series of episodes unexpectedly. When Hazel and Augustus met Van Houten, they found that he was just a mean-spirited drunk, who claimed that he had no answers for their questions. They both were really disappointed. But here comes an applauding scene for the readers. They both confessed their love for each other and made love for the first, and yes, for the last time. They both were made for each other. But Augustus revealed something that change their lives for the worst.
He told Hazel that when she was admitted in the hospital, he had a body scan which revealed that his cancer had returned and it had become more worse then ever before. Here comes the worst phase of Hazel’s life. She was so much in love with Augustus that she could never imagine her life without him. But she had to face the truth. And she faced it very bravely. Augustus’s condition deteriorated quickly and he lost all his charm and confidence. But for Hazel, he was still the most smart and charming boy. In his final days, Augustus arranged a prefuneral for himself, and Isaac and Hazel gave eulogies. Hazel stole line from Van Houten and said that she love Augustus and that she would never trade their time spent together for anything in the world.
Later, when he died, Hazel found Van Houten in his funeral and revealed that Augustus was in contact with him and Augustus demanded Van Houten to make up for his mistake by coming to his funeral and to see Hazel. Then Houten tried to reveal the fate of Anna’s mother but she was not interested. Later he once again met her drunked and revealed that Anna was the name of his daughter and she died of cancer when she was eight and an Imperial Affliction was his literary attempt at reconciling himself for her death. Listening to this, Hazel told Van Houten to sober up and write another book.
Isaac also revealed that Augustus was writing something for her. Eventually she learned that Augustus sent his writing to Van Houten to use it and to compose eulogy for her. Van Houten sent those pages of writing straight off to Hazel. And here the novel concludes with Hazel reading Augustus’ words for her. He wrote that we need to choose as to who we allow to hurt us and that he his happy with his choice. He hoped she liked her choice too. The last words of the novel is from Hazel, who says “she does”.
So guys, do you like it? It is a novel that will make you laugh, cry and smile throughout. Now At last, I would like to discuss briefly about the title of the novel. I had discussion with many of my friends but everyone had this one question. Why did the author choose this title for the book? I will tell you that here. ‘The Fault in our stars’ indicates that problem is not created by us but the problem is within us. Cancer, as we see in the novel, is certainly not their fault, but that is clearly within them.
There is a play written by Shakespeare about Julius Caesar, in which the nobleman Cassius says to Brutus, ‘The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings.’ John Green states that this is why he called his book that.
This book is a masterpiece. Even though, you will see death throughout the book, but still it is not a sad book. Even if you will be crying, but than also you can’t stop reading it. You just have to continue till the end.
